- Dear Sirs:
-
- My name is Bryce L. Tomlinson. I live in the USA, and I have a
- complaint.
-
- Often here, it is said that if it looks too good to be true, well, it
- probably is. Paxtron falls well under this category. For several months,
- Paxtron has advertised an alleged "Revision 8a" motherboard for the A500,
- just released from Commodore. Well, without going into all the garbage
- about Commodore not really existing anymore, I'll tell you that this
- motherboard probably does not exist, in its advertised form.
-
- Last monday, I called up Paxtron, asking to buy a revision 8a
- motherboard, and they had none in stock, and supposedly were not going to
- have any more in stock, although they still had some A500's that did have
- the 8a board in them. And these sold for about $299 US. Again without
- digressing into how ridiculous a price this is for a mail order outlet to
- charge for any Amiga 500, I'll tell you that I didn't buy one.
-
- I proceeded to order a Revision 6a motherboard. They told me they
- didn't have Revision 6a's, only 6's. I don't recall there being a
- Revision 6 motherboard, but since I have not worked for Commodore, I
- couldn't say for sure. I ordered this motherboard.
-
- 1 week later, my package had not arrived, so I inquired on the progress
- of my order. They told me at this point that they didn't have any and had
- to order some, and they would be in very, very soon. Today, I inquired
- again on the progress of my order, not wanting to waste any more trips to
- my Post Office box on my days off to see that it had not shown up. The
- sales representative I spoke to informed me that they were "testing" them
- out, and they should be ready by the END of next week... 3 weeks via
- credit card to purchase something they were "testing"? I had decided it
- was time to cancel my order before I got ripped off. Call me paranoid.
-
- I called up another company and was able to get one shipped off via
- overnight delivery, since they did have revision 6a in stock. Then I
- called Paxtron, and told them I wanted to cancel my order. The sales rep
- apologized for the delay and told me she would take care of everything. I
- told her I needed to find out positively if I had been charged for this
- purchase (it takes 2 statements for refunds to show up on credit cards),
- and she told me she would have to check in the bookkeeper's computer to
- see if it had been charged. My adventure had just begun.
-
- Very soon, a man answered the phone, and introduced himself in a
- friendly manner, and asked me if I was sure that I wanted to cancel my
- order. I told him that I had already ordered another board overnight. He
- told me that I was written down to recieve a -REVISION 5- motherboard. I
- said, "Great! I ordered a 6!" He said that there was no difference
- between the 5 and the 6 except the chips. On the contrary, I pointed out
- that there are many differences, INCLUDING, but not limited to, the chips.
- He asked me if I'd ever seen a revision 6. I told him that a real
- revision 6 motherboard was a different animal altogether from the 5, since
- there are pads for PAL MODE and 1 MEG CHIP RAM which allow you to make
- modifications without tearing up the circuitboard. He said "ohhhhh,
- you're worried about the circuitboard... you wanna hack it". I told him
- that if I ordered a 6, he'd better be sending me a 6 and not a 5.
-
- This conversation went on much longer than it really needed to, with
- the man declaring that he was helping out the DYING AMIGA COMMUNITY by
- upgrading revision 5 motherboards and selling them as 6's.
-
- I see this advertiser of yours as PURE MISREPRESENTATION... in fine
- form! If this is what I get for ordering a revision 6 motherboard, what
- do I get by buying this "Just Released From Commodore" Revision 8a???
- Hey, if it's a modified board, I might buy it, but he should be TELLING ME
- THAT. Bait and switch is an illegal practice in the United States, and
- that is just what he is doing.
